Bear Fruit in Keeping with Repentance (Saint Andrew)

Sermon given by the Rev. Nathan Stomberg on 2 Advent (12/4/2022).

We don’t get to hand out free passes to heaven. Recall Saint Andrew’s words to his brother: “We have found the Messiah.” What a glorious reality! That’s the heart of the Gospel. “Look what I’ve found! And I want you to share in it!”

We need Advent to remind us of these responsibilities as we wait for Christ to return. And for that reason, Andrew is the perfect saint to start the Advent season. He also (unsurprisingly) embodies the call of John the Baptist in today’s Gospel reading for the second Sunday of Advent to “bear fruit in keeping with repentance.”

Readings: Isaiah 11:1-10; Psalm 72:1-8; Romans 15:4-13; Matthew 3:1-12
